Szkéné Theatre
Szkéné Theatre works as an alternative receiving theatre maintained by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Its totally flexible black box stage was opened in 1970 as the first theatre room of that type in Hungary. Since then on it has become one of most important home of independent theatre and dance companies. By the artistic leadership of just recently departed Pál Regős, for long decades, it had been acommodated such very important international theatre and dance projects like IDMC and IMMT both performed an unavoidable part in inspiring contemporary Hungarian stage art.
In each epoch a „residental company” determinded the main stream of Szkéné Theatre. After Arvisura Theatre and Last Line Co. the internationally reknowned Pintér Béla and Co. have stepped on to fill this role. Besides the leading groups it would hardly be enlisted the names of those who could use our theatre as a springboard to start their career in performing arts.
Béla Pintér says: „”This place is miraculous, I would say that within Budapest, but what is more, nowhere else, I did feel that sort of fascination: one looks out the window and can see the whole city of Budapest. Not only the panorama that matters but the spirit of the place! Here an opening can be preceded by a state of grace when anything unexpected, humanly unforeseeable can happen. I bear this feeling of the whole life in Szkéné. Theatre is the Art of the Moment and Szkéné serves as a wonderful metaphore of it.”
